West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge (3 Stars)

Lofty and Patches were born in southeast Africa, and at about three-years-old they were loaded onto a ship and spent 54 days at sea. Beyond the seasickness, they also endured a hurricane. After arriving in New York, they were transported across the United States to the San Diego Zoo. West with Giraffes is historical fiction based on the cross-country trip.

At 105, Woody Nickel, sees on TV that giraffes are going extinct. As the driver that took the pair from NYC to San Diego, Woody claims “few true friends have I known and two were giraffes.” Woody is determined that everyone should know their story.

A survivor of the Dust Bowl, and a hurricane, and The Great Depression, 17-year-old Woody is determined to get to California. Woody finally wrangles his way into the job of driver, and the 12-day trip is packed with adventure. The book is an enjoyable coming of age story, a love story, an exploration of the power of animals to change us and the kindness of strangers.
